Samsung Galaxy Note 7

Samsung’s Note series of ‘phablets’ (between a phone and a tablet) have been a hotbed of innovation for the company, even if they have never really sold in numbers comparable to the company’s market-leading smartphones.The Note 5 (the previous model, more on the model numbering later!) was not even launched in the UK or the rest of Europe, the company preferring to launch the S6 Edge+ here, a smartphone with a stylus.

Size and the stylus have been key differences between the Note models and most of the Note 7’s functionality works perfectly well without the stylus. But if you are not planning to use it, why not go for the S7 or S7 Edge, Samsung’s excellent flagship smartphones?

What will you get in the new Note 7?

First, it seems that Samsung have decided to skip the Note 6 name altogether and name the latest device the Note 7 to come into line with the S7/S7 Edge smartphones launched in March. Interestingly, the size of the new device is close to the S7/S7 Edge. It is only 3mm longer, 1mm wider and less than 1mm deeper while the screen is 5.7 inches, compared to 5.5 for the S7/S7 Edge.

There will be just one Note 7 with a curved metal and glass body, there will be no lower spec ‘flat’ version, and the device will be waterproof to 1.5m for up to 30 minutes, just like the S7/S7 Edge. It will come with the S-Pen stylus stored in a slot next to the microphone in the base of the Note 7 and usable underwater. Launch colours will be Black Onyx, Silver Titanium and Blue Coral.

The display is 5.7in Quad HD and uses Samsung’s patented Super AMOLED technology which reduces glare and increases sharpness, especially on larger screens like this. It will have an ‘always on’ display of key information. The Note 7 will use Samsung’s own Exynos 8890 processor, probably running Android Marshmallow, and carry huge 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, expandable through the microSD slot. The battery is the same 3500Amh power pack used in the S7 Edge and will not be removable. The rear-facing camera is likely to be the same 12mp model used in Samsung’s flagship phones, optimised for low-light photography and featuring an ultra-fast auto focus feature to ensure you get THAT shot! The new Note also features wireless charging and the ability to record 4K Video.  

Note 7 major innovations:

The Note 7 will have two major innovations. First, it will introduce an iris recognition scanner which will enable users to unlock the device simply by looking at it! Iris recognition will be faster and more accurate than current fingerprint recognition systems. Second, the Note 7 will feature USB-C technology which gives faster charging and faster data transfer.
